Drowsiness. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Vomiting. Weakness. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. PHYSICAL DANGERS: Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. CHEMICAL DANGERS: The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes (nitrogen oxides). The substance is a strong reducing agent and reacts violently with oxidants and strong bases. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs): TLV: 0.1 mg/m3 A4 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1997). MAK: 0.1 mg/m3; H, S, IIIB (1996) ROUTES OF EXPOSURE: The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation through the skin and by ingestion. INHALATION RISK: A harmful contamination of the air will not or will only very slowly be reached on evaporation of this substance at 20░C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster. EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE: The substance irritates the eyes. Inhalation of dust may cause asthmatic reactions (see Notes). Swelling of mouth and throat may be observed following ingestion. The substance may cause effects on the blood , resulting in formation of methaemoglobin. Exposure may result in death. EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE: Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Repeated or prolonged inhalation exposure may cause asthma. The substance may have effects on the kidneys , resulting in kidney impairment. N O T E S Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact with this substance. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
